Steven Hyland internship Gain valuable work experience while in school through a WQED Multimedia Internship. We offer a creative and challenging environment, a convenient Oakland location (public transportation outside our door), and flexible schedule.

WQED Multimedia offers comprehensive, challenging non-paid internships in TV Production, Radio, Communications, Business & Revenue, Educational Resources, and Publishing to college students seeking knowledge and experience in the Multimedia industry. Internships are offered for college credit, and past interns have been offered positions with the company when available.

DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Position Summary

Responsibilities

  • Assist with writing and editing of campaign and publication materials.
  • Assist with production and execution of donor cultivation mailings.
  • Attend development meetings and contribute ideas/opinions.
  • Assist with day to day management of donor database and filing.
  • Attend WQED Multimedia special events.
  • Assist with acknowledgment letters for major donors.
  • Use online resources to research prospective donors.
  • Assist in other department activities, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Well-organized, good writing skills; eye for detail;
  • Self-directed and able to follow through independently on assigned tasks;
  • Computer proficiency, including Word, Excel, and internet research; database and spreadsheet experience necessary.

MARKETING/ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain spreadsheets and databases
  • Research inquiries regarding past magazine articles
  • Assist with production and execution of mailings, including magazine orders
  • Work with Publishing Office Manager and Marketing/Circulation Manager on special projects
  • Assist with day to day management of subscription database and filing
  • Assist with preparation for and occasionally attend PITTSBURGH magazine events

Qualifications

  • Well-organized, good writing skills, eye for detail
  • Self-directed and able to follow through independently on assigned tasks
  • Computer proficiency, including Word, Excel, and internet research; database and spreadsheet experience necessary. Flexible schedule, approx. 10-20 hours per week

MARKETING DEPARTMENT INTERN

Responsibilities

  • Follow-up with marketing requests to make sure all necessary components of project are collected; create a project calendar for marketing requests
  • Assist in writing press releases, media advisories, and other items as assigned
  • Research and update media contact list
  • Attend station meetings as assigned
  • Re-write and update talent bios
  • Assist with community relations activities including screenings, award ceremonies, presenting station activities, and other events
  • Create a media coverage clip-book to measure and track media impressions of placements
  • Assist with coordination of awards entries and prospective awards research
  • Gather information for monthly On Air Guide; coordinate with editor on gathering photos and other materials
  • Other marketing/communications as assigned by the Executive Director of Marketing

Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Desire to learn and confidence in asking questions
  • Good customer relations skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Knowledge of digital photography
  • Knowledge of graphic design
  • Ability to use graphic design software a plus
  • Training in graphic design preferred

  • Schedule/Hours per Week: M, W, F; hours flexible
  • Ability to be able to work evenings and weekends as time/projects require

SUMMER MEMBERSHIP INTERN

Department: Development and Membership
Hours: Between 9am and 5pm (some night/weekend as agreed upon)

WQED is one of a handful of stations in the country to use clubs to reach out to member's special interests. Develop communication skills and gain great experience in an exciting field with many job opportunities while working with the membership team and WQED Clubs on various projects.

Interns will assist with various aspects of Member Services such as:

  • Writing
  • Coordinating Events
    • Club events when applicable
  • Assisting with the WQED Clubs
  • Assisting with FM Member Announcements
  • Assist Membership Supervisor during On-Air Pledge/Fundraising
  • Assist in creating the 2009 MemberCard program
    • Solicit over 4,000 companies to join
    • Data entry of new and renewing participants
    • Updating information for the Online MemberCard UserGuide
    • MemberCard list management

Interns will assist the WQED Clubs in the following:

  • Writing and editing the Cooking Club, History Club, Kids' Club and WQED Presents and Sustainers newsletter
  • Managing monthly Kids' Club birthday mailings and online listings
  • Developing monthly fliers for Kids' Club events
  • Develop monthly content for www.wqed.org/kids
  • Manage club mailings
  • Supervise a team of volunteers for large mailing projects

Intern must be skilled in the following computer programs:

  • Microsoft Publisher
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Word

Intern must have good overall communication skills (phone, writing, in person). Intern must have writing experience/skills.

PUBLISHING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
PITTSBURGH magazine is accepting applications for publishing internships in the spring (Jan. through May), summer (May through Sept.) and fall (Sept. through Jan.) of 2008. The deadline for spring applications is Dec. 11, 2007; summer applications are due April 1, 2008; fall applications are due August 1, 2008.

Responsibilities:
Highly motivated interns will learn about the editorial process by fact-checking each month's stories before they go to print in PITTSBURGH magazine, Pittsburgh Weddings, Pittsburgh Home + Garden and City Guide. Interns will hone reporting skills through fact-checking by contacting sources over the phone, and will research facts using reference material and by speaking with local experts. Other responsibilities include writing at least one article for publication (depending on the interest and initiative of the intern), attending some Pittsburgh magazine events and completing some administrative tasks.

Internships are not paid. Interns can receive college credit, and are acknowledged in the magazine's masthead.

Qualifications:
Student with a background in journalism, communications or non-fiction writing; must be well-organized, reliable and resourceful; must be computer proficient in Word and Internet Explorer.

RADIO INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Position Summary

Responsibilities

  • Assist with programming and production
  • Assist with customer service
  • Prepare arts information for broadcast and web
  • Assist with day to day management of music library and MusicMaster
  • Assist with writing and editing of Pittsburgh Symphony Radio scripts
  • Edit interviews and arts news for broadcast and web
  • Make field recordings
  • Assist with archival process
  • Assist with live remotes
  • Assist in other departmental activities, as needed

Qualifications

  • Must be interested in radio production
  • Well-organized, good writing and communication skills and an eye for detail
  • Knowledge of audio editing or a desire to learn
  • Familiarity with classical music a plus

Responsibilities

  • Assist Account Executives in the Publishing Sales Department.
  • Interns will be assigned to assist Account Executives in research, client visits, placing calls, and producing ads for magazine and Internet.
