Volunteer Opportunities

ABOUT VOLUNTEERING AT WQED
WQED uses three general types of volunteers.

Pledge Volunteers

Radio and Television Pledge Volunteers
At WQED, we generate the lion's share of our operating revenue through on-air member pledge drives. Pledge drives allow us to feature special programming for our television viewers and radio listeners, and allow us to offer special premiums as our way of saying "thank you" to our new and renewing members. During our radio and television pledge drives, listeners and viewers call our studio and make a financial pledge of support. In order to process these vital pledges, we need volunteers to act as phone operators.

Pledge phone operators answer our radio and television studio phones and process member pledges by asking for basic contact information from our members. They also collect general payment information, and can assist our members in selecting a thank-you gift.

Pledge phone operators work in our television and radio studios alongside other volunteers and supervisors. All our pledge operators are trained by our supervisors in using our phone system, as well as our computer system.

We ask all volunteers to commit to being scheduled for a minimum 4 hour shift. Television phone operator shifts can be scheduled as early as 8am and as late as 11pm, depending on availability and programming. Radio phone operator shifts can be scheduled as early as 6am or as late as 6pm.

Office Volunteers
WQED Multimedia is comprised of many different departments and units. We produce television programming, radio programming, as well as print media. Many of our units and departments need volunteers to help carry out basic but vital tasks.

Office volunteers help sort letters and mailings to our thousands of members. They also help us stuff envelopes, sort thank you gifts, and prepare packages for shipment.  They can also help us call other volunteers and rally support.

We ask all volunteers to commit to being scheduled for a minimum 4 hour shift. Office volunteers can be scheduled anytime during our normal office hours, which are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Special Events Volunteers
WQED is involved in your community, and organizes or sponsors special events. Concerts, activities, and fundraisers can be an exciting way for some of our invested volunteers to help WQED while being part of an exciting event.

Special events volunteers are scheduled as the event permits.

Organization Volunteers

ORGANIZATIONS AND GROUPS
Volunteering at WQED is a great activity for any business or organization. Groups of your employees or members can volunteer to work the same shifts as a group. You can each wear t-shirts branded with your business or group logo. You can also wear matching hats.

Volunteering as a group is a great way to give back to the community while raising public awareness of your group or business. To learn more, check out the WQED Pledge Partnership Program.

FINDING SPECIFIC VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Whether you find yourself interested in volunteering for a radio or television pledge drive, or in our offices, WQED has specific days and times when we need you! To find out what those needs are and specific days and times, check out our interactive online calendar.

"We just enjoy it so much. We watch WQED and love it,
and the least we can do is come in to help, and give back
to the station"

-Sisters, Irene Jacobowski and Gertrude Long

Mike Schmidt

"Public Broadcasting is more interesting than other popular media channels. It's more engaging, plus PBS is the only place to find the British comedies. Volunteering here is fun!"
