Pittsburgher of the Year: Randy Pausch

CMU professor Randy Pausch's last lecture, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," was a YouTube phenomenon that captivated the world. His book, based on the same principals, became a runaway best seller. Pausch died last July of pancreatic cancer at age 47. He lived an extraordinary life, and in dying he inspired others on how to live.

Have Yourself a Swanky New Year

This New Year's Eve, forget about banging pots and pans with a wooden spoon at midnight. In fact, ditch the pots and pans altogether and let one of the posh restaurants we uncovered serve your dinner--with wine pairings and a champagne toast at midnight, of course--and do the cleaning up for you. CLICK HERE for four romantic destinations are all offering prix-fixe, multicourse dinners; they're all close to the city, and perhaps most important, they're all little-black-dress approved.

PittGirl Exits (cyber) Stage Left

In our second-ever "Techburgh" column ("From PittGirl With Love," Nov. 2008), we profiled PittGirl, or Jane Pitt, an anonymous online blogger whose hilarious rantings were found at theburghblog.com. Reading her take on life in "da 'Burgh" had become a daily ritual for many of her close to 80,000 readers. Then, suddenly, she was gone. As this issue went to press, her "goodbye letter" was still posted on the Web site that formerly housed her blog. An excerpt: "I've got to say goodbye to you all... I hope you'll trust me that I'm doing what I must do, for my comfort level, for my privacy and for my life." Were you one of PittGirl's devoted readers?
