ZOSCAK’S MARKET The Zoscak family has been operating a small corner grocery store and butcher shop in the Tenth Ward of McKeesport since 1934. A bit off the beaten path, it still serves as a neighborhood gathering spot, a place to get some great, freshly cut meat (as well as bread and milk and a selection of the other groceries), a hoagie and sandwich shop, a newsstand (where the delivery of the McKeesport Daily News is always eagerly anticipated) and a good place to hang out and talk to Tim Zoscak. The trusty Ruth Craft makes the hoagies and manages the store when Tim’s not around.
Here at WQED, we found out about Zoscak’s from a woman named Susan Ferri who had grown up not far from the store, although she and her family now live in Seven Fields, PA, north of Pittsburgh, near Cranberry. She sent a letter, pointing out that Tim was celebrating the store’s seventieth anniversary in 2004: “His business is unique in that it is a local corner grocery store where people can walk to do their daily shopping. Tim has seen many changes, especially in the once thriving city of McKeesport where the store is located. Aside from local residents frequenting Zoscak’s Market, many people travel to the market to purchase quality hand cut meats and fresh produce.”
Once you’ve been there, you can understand why people will travel to patronize the place. Tim gives old-fashioned service, cutting meat to order and sharing jokes he’s heard from his suppliers and other salesmen.
Tim also makes a mean, lean sausage with a closely-guarded secret family recipe.
